Fungal diseases take on a variety of forms, from dead-looking brown patches to highly visible spots, threads and rings.

Most fungi thrive in an environment where humidity and moisture levels are high. Watering at night time, particularly in the summer when conditions are hot and humid, is a leading cause of fungal disease. There are many different types of fungi that can affect your lawn, below we talk about the most common fungi we come across.

Grey Leaf Spot

This is a disease most commonly evident in Buffalo grass. Even though they first appear as small, brown lesions on the leaf, they can extend across the whole leaf exhibiting a blueish-grey colour. When the disease is at its worst, the lawn can look like it is suffering from extreme drought.

Dollar Spot

Dollar Spot shows up on the lawn as small circular straw coloured patches. The spot varies in size and can be as small as a 50 cent coin. When these patches occur very close together they can combine into larger patches. The blades of grass will generally die back from the tip. In the morning time, when there is dew on the grass, keep an eye out for “spider webs” on the lawn. These are called Mycelium Threads and are a by-product of the disease.

Brown Patch

Brown Patch is characterised by irregular circular patches in the lawn that are brownish yellow in colour. Sizes vary from a few centimetres up to a metre in diameter. It generally has a distinctive “Smoke Ring” that borders the disease itself. It is a foliar disease, meaning that only the grass blade itself is affected.
